Have a machine and don’t know how to use it? Or, do you want to try out sewing or quilting before deciding whether you want to purchase a machine? Maybe you just need guidance on a new technique that you are attempting for the first time. I teach sewing lessons to those in Southwest Iowa. All sewing lessons and sewing classes meet in our private sewing studio at Quilts & Other Notions in Creston, Iowa. Currently, we are offering private or semi-private basis to meet the needs of our customers and their hectic schedules, but we do offer classes for intermediate and advanced quilters and textile artists.

Private or semi-private sewing lessons are $20/hour with a two-hour minimum, so $40 total for two hours of one-on-one (or one-on-two) lesson time. Please contact me at or (641) 782-8874 and we can schedule a time that will fit your needs

Please download your registration form here. Please contact me to schedule your lesson, then print, fill out and send in the registration form or bring it with you to your first lesson. Please give me 48 hours’ notice if you need to reschedule your private or semi-private session.

In addition to the fabrics and notions for the project you
ʼd like to make (please check with me ahead of time so we can discuss your goals and Iʼll make suggestions on patterns), please bring the following supplies:

Basic Sewing Supplies (Also available for purchase)

  • Fabric scissors

  • Rotary cutter, ruler, and mat (if quilting). We have some on hand, if you want to try before you buy!
  • Thread. Use GOOD thread. We recommend Mettler, which we carry in store.

  • Pins (Ball-headed pins of 1 1/4- 1 1/2” long, in a box, are best)

  • Pincushion or magnetic pin holder

  • Fabric marking tools - water soluble pen or chalk pencil in white and light blue

  • Small snips for cutting threads

  • Seam ripper

  • If youʼre learning how to use your sewing machine, please bring 1/2 yard of scrap

fabric so we can practice stitches.

If youʼre bringing your own sewing machine:

  • Please make sure itʼs in good working order. If itʼs been sitting for awhile or is a hand- me-down and you donʼt know its history, please test it out. Itʼs a good idea to have machines serviced annually. We service machines at Quilts & Other Notions! Their price is currently set at $79+tax for a tune-up/cleaning.

  • Bring all accessories like sewing machine feet, cords, the foot pedal, AND your ownerʼs manual. If you donʼt have a manual, google your machineʼs make and model and download a free one.

  • Don't forget your bobbins! An extra bobbin or two for your machine would be helpful. All styles of machines use different bobbins!
